Ah, well. It’s long overdue, really — and I’m glad it’s only a Covid tentacle (variant) that found its way in here.
However, it’s the end of the school year. Because of quarantining, one’s grammar to middle school change tour — missed; graduation from grammar school — to-be-missed; very last grammar school field trip — to-be-missed; last ever Field Day — to-be-missed.
It’s also the end of soccer season: another’s playoffs — missed.
The grammar school girl’s first 5K for which she, too, has been preparing for months — missed.
Their littlest bro who has been stuck for days in a row at Dad’s without his most loved playmates (here) — will be staying there longer, now that two or more here have tested Positive — including his mom.
And of course, youngest daughter and son-in-law and their adorbs little one can’t come back to us from their week in California for their two last days up here after all.
So, yes, the timing sucks, not least of all because daughter/mom-of-4 will miss her last week of paid work as a playground monitor. Her summer job search is on hold. So is the monumental move to an apartment, if she got it..
But it also doesn’t suck. The virus was kept from the California family entirely, and after the two more days, our Southerners were planning to drive to a hugely attended afternoon wedding in Vermont, and then after an overnight there, driving for at least 12 hours back to their home in the South.
Imagine doing so with a fierce headache, maybe vomiting, having the runs, very sore throat –not to even mention passing it around at the wedding! One of the youngsters was flat on his back for a couple of days.
I don’t know if 8-mo. olds have gotten this variant, but that would be horrendous with the above symptoms. Plus, the Dad’s a Marine and HAS to be back by a certain date — there couldn’t be any stopping for a day or two while things calmed down for this one or that one or all of them!
So, there was a mostly Hail Mary pass, really.
The older one here, the teen, may’ve escaped the virus since he doesn’t much hang out with anyone beyond meals at the table sometimes, but they all share a bathroom upstairs and those who tested Negative are now testing Positive one by one.
We’ll see where we’re at when the 8 (government-issued? state?) free tests that daughter requested arrive — and maybe we won’t. Maybe we’ll just presume only I and the two fully-vaxxed guys escaped it (so far..), and we’ll save the tests for upcoming summer events. Like the M-F day camp for two of the kids!
*adds “Merlot” to shopping list*
And with that, I’m goin’ fishin’ from here for a while. So many things to do before the heat and humidity kick in, so few calendar days (sometimes)!
Peace, happy trails, and stay well!
